Het concept wordt vaak gelinkd met 'big data' maar verschilt in het oogpunt dat het vaak genegeerd wordt door bedrijfs- en IT-mensen zoals bevoorbeeld gebruikerslogs en call center logs. Net zoals 'dark matter' in fysica omvat 'dark data' vaak het overgrote deel van een organizatie's data.
